CTELL was happy to welcome Dr Tim Marr, Universidad Icesi in Colombia, and Steve Collins, Bishop Luffa School, Chichester, to talk about the importance of language awareness in schools. The speakers demonstrated how a language-aware approach throughout schools has the potential to transform both whole-school policy and classroom practice. Examples from various school contexts provided a good insight into actual practices and showed how misconceptions about the role of Standard English, or attitudes to the use of local dialect and slang can impact on day-to-day practices.

The workshop was well attended by school teachers and leaders as well as university lecturers. It ended in a lively discussion of how language awareness can be incorporated not only into the teaching of English literature, but can also be useful in the teaching of science and other disciplines.
