Christmas goes online: Paula Antela Costa demonstrates the use of Escape Rooms for language teaching

Published on

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit during lockdown than a virtual escape to pre-Christmas Spain? Paula Antela Costa from the University of Liverpool developed a panoramic view on gamification and how it can be used for language teaching in a CTELL workshop just before Christmas 2020.

The workshop was a timely reminder of the opportunities of online teaching, how it can motivate students and encourage them to engage. Showing that to ‘gamify’ is more than just to ‘play’, Antela Costa gave examples of grammar points and vocabulary that can be developed through digital locks. Not only are online Escape Rooms entertaining, they also help students develop particular points, practice the language and perfectionate their linguistic skills.

Having learned how to create a virtual Escape Room with digital locks, many colleagues went away inspired to develop an Escape Room for their own students.
