A strategic collaboration between the University of Liverpool and
Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). It is committed to
supporting and undertaking high quality, collaborative and inter-
disciplinary research that examines the concept, existence and
relevance of cultural capital in contemporary society. The Institute
focuses on research touching on the value of cultural interventions
in regeneration, wellbeing and in shaping national and international
agendas more broadly.
The Institute of Cultural Capital represents a significant portfolio
of arts and cultural research and academic centres of excellence
within the city, including the Liverpool School of Art and Design at
LJMU and the Schools of Architecture, English and Music at the
University of Liverpool.

Mathematical tools and techniques play a key role for the better
understanding and modelling of real-life problems where
different kinds of risks and uncertainties can be involved.
The Institute aims to enhance, support and stimulate research in
the mathematical techniques of the financial and actuarial practices
which have become increasingly important in the daily business
of banks and insurance companies.
Research includes probability theory, optimisation algorithms and
techniques, data analysis and statistics, extreme value techniques,
robust control and stability methods, stochastic processes, pricing
strategies, structural (CAT) bonds and ruin theory.
The Institute also designs and delivers courses and programmes
to undergraduate and postgraduate level in actuarial and financial
mathematics for people that are looking to start a career in the
financial or insurance industries.

An interdisciplinary centre for the University’s expertise in quantifying,
mitigating and managing risk and uncertainty. Members have
applied risk and uncertainty methods to many fields including
building design, climate analysis, reliability engineering, software
reliability, materials science, financial modelling, socio-political
harm reduction and critical incident management.
The Institute aims to catalyse thinking across disciplines and
sectors and create truly novel ideas and solutions that impact
radically on the way the world approaches risk and uncertainty.
Through collaborative work it strives to create a powerhouse of new
ideas, approaches and methods with which to understand and
manage an uncertain world.
Its primary goals are: to research and develop new risk and
uncertainty methodologies, applications and theory; to provide
research, consultancy and training services to government,
business and industry; to deliver postgraduate education and
training at PhD levels in risk and uncertainty.
