Liverpool BioInnovation Centre

To be completed in 2014 as an entirely new state-of-the-art 90,000
sq ft building with six floors for life science start up businesses who
will share facilities and expertise, supported by a proof of concept
laboratory with a business support and commercialisation centre.
A broad range of small, medium and large industrial partners
are sought to develop this space as part of a vibrant life science
commercialisation hub. Businesses will co-locate with groups of
academic and health service institutions working in this field.
Liverpool BioInnovation Centre will provide a central focus for
discovery-led innovation within the Liverpool City Region and deliver
pivotal developments to anchor the growth of the Liverpool
Bio-Campus, built on public-private partnership as the principle
means to realise greater patient benefit.
Three-way collaboration between the industrial, academic and health
service sectors provides the necessary strengths for the discovery
and development of new biomarkers, diagnostics, drugs and
interventions to improve health.

A virtual centre of expertise which provides multidisciplinary
research and innovative knowledge based on world-class
capabilities in applied materials chemistry. The Centre acts as
a single point of contact for companies of all sizes to access a
substantial range of facilities and expertise in applied materials
chemistry at four leading academic institutions (the universities
of Bolton, Liverpool and Manchester and the Science and
Technology Facilities Council at Daresbury). It offers proactive
help in the formulation and delivery of collaborative R&D projects,
fast track project initiation with dedicated project scientists in our
partner institutions, excellent project management and knowledge
transfer expertise.

Lairdside Laser Engineering Centre

Bridges the gap between research concept and shop-floor
production, allowing UK businesses unrivalled access to expertise,
equipment and training in the field of laser material processing.
The Centre’s ability to transfer processes from laboratory
experiment to robust industrial method is a valuable resource for
the manufacturing industry. The Centre also incorporates the
North West Laser Engineering Consortium.

Liverpool Cancer Research UK Centre

The umbrella organisation which brings together NHS cancer
services and University of Liverpool cancer researchers. Its aim is
to provide a world-class centre that will contribute to each of the

strategic goals of CRUK in Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens,
and the Mersey Region as a whole. A particular focus of the Centre
is to improve understanding of how cancer starts and progresses,
and the development of better treatments with fewer side effects,
especially tackling cancer in low income communities.
Facilities include good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) labs
for biomarker validation; pre-clinical testing (with facilities for
fluorescent and micro-CT imaging); transgenic facilities; live cell,
multi-photon and con-focal and electron microscopy; structural
biology; and proteomic analysis.

Exists to promote the best possible health outcomes from
available resources through the evaluation of costs and benefits of
healthcare interventions. The Unit works in collaboration with
local and national health services, the pharmaceutical industry,
and other organisations to inform and support healthcare
decision making.
The group’s status as an independent academic unit with close
links to NHS policy-makers and other academic groups ensures
the credibility and influence of its work, both within the academic
and health service communities.
