Impacts08
Theme(s)
Society & Culture
Website
A joint research initiative between the University of Liverpool and
Liverpool John Moores University. It has evaluated the social,
cultural, economic and environmental effects of Liverpool hosting
the European Capital of Culture in 2008. The research programme
was central to the development of the Liverpool Model for
evaluating the impact and value of cultural interventions. The
expertise of Impacts08 researchers and their experience of the
Liverpool Model is now being exploited by other cities, organisations
and cultural events across the globe.
IMPACT – International Health
Impact Assessment Consortium
Theme(s)
Health & Wellbeing
Website
This is a World Health Organisation designated Collaborating
Centre for policy research on social determinants of health.
It aims to improve health and reduce health inequalities by
advancing Health Impact Assessment (HIA). Since the 1990s, the
team has pioneered the development of HIA methodologies and
tools now widely used around the world, through research,
knowledge exchange, continuing professional development (CPD)
and consultancy.
The use of systematic approaches to assess the potential
impacts of research and future products could help SMEs and
other partners to identify the potential benefits of their products
and services to population health and wellbeing, helping them to
develop their unique selling points and competitive edge.

Concerned with a wide range of problems in environmental
radioactivity. The Centre specialises in the use of low-background
hyper-pure germanium gamma spectrometers for measuring
low-level environmental radioactivity. Collaborating with universities
and international environmental research centres, it has made a
significant contribution to the understanding and management of
environmental change.
Impact Research Centre
Theme(s)
Materials, Advanced Design & Manufacturing
Enables researchers and engineers to investigate how materials
and structures respond to large dynamic loads. It addresses
questions as diverse as energy absorption in aerospace
composites and metal foams; the low velocity impact performance
of glass-reinforced plastic sandwich panels; and the dynamic
response of optimised lattice structures manufactured
by means of selective laser melting (SLM).
Its facilities include: a gas gun; powder guns; drop hammers;
a hyperbaric chamber; catapults; Hopkinsons bars; high rate
servohydraulic test machines; and a high energy test cell
equipped with a pulse pressure loading rig (PPLR).
Interchange

Risk, Safety & Security
Website
A registered charity which links Higher Education Institutes with local
community, voluntary and faith (CVF) organisations from Greater
Merseyside. Interchange offers a wide range of research- or work-
based projects, including evaluation studies, documentary and oral
histories, feasibility studies and community activities. Interchange is
operated by the University of Liverpool in partnership with Liverpool
Hope University and is funded by the John Moores Foundation.
The organisation coordinates research activity by students within
organisations in the North West.
