Personal Statement
Dr Malathouni is a qualified architect and architectural historian with extensive experience in the heritage sector, specialising in 20th-century architectural heritage. She holds a MSc and a PhD degree from The Bartlett, University College London, having previously studied at the School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens, Greece. She is a member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC, UK), ICOMOS-UK, and ICOMOS-ISC20C. In the past, she had also been registered with the Architects Registration Bureau (ARB, UK) and the Technical Chamber of Greece (as Registered Architect), although she has now resigned.
Her research has explored various associations between human nature and space and is currently focusing on historical perspectives of 20th-century healthcare architecture, including their heritage potential. For her principal live project on mental health facilities in post-war England, she has received funding from the Wellcome Trust ISSF. For her postgraduate studies and doctoral research she received grants from The Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain, the UCL Graduate School, The Bartlett School of Architecture, the State Scholarships Foundation (Greece) and the A. S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (Greece).
