About the University

We are the original redbrick. A member of the Russell Group and one of the top 200 universities in the world (THE 2022, QS 2022) the University of Liverpool was established in 1881 and we can truly claim to be the original ‘redbrick’ university – the phrase was coined about our distinctive red brick Victoria Building.

We are rightly proud of our founding mission - ‘for the advancement of learning and ennoblement of life’ which underlines our belief in the transformative power of research and education, not least in the face of an increasingly complex and challenging world.

Associated with nine Nobel Laureates and with a global network of 270,000 alumni in 171 countries, the University is recognised for its high-quality teaching and research. In 2023 we were awarded TEF Gold, the highest award for teaching excellence.

Our research expertise spans a broad range of disciplines and is worldleading in a number of subject areas. Our research collaborations extend worldwide and address many of the grand challenges facing society today. We have a national profile for our contribution to widening participation as a Russell Group university, with a strong track record in supporting people from all walks of life to overcome any barriers they may otherwise face in progressing to higher education.

We are ranked top in the Russell Group for admission of students from low participation neighbourhoods, and admission from state schools and colleges. With a campus in the heart of the warm and welcoming city of Liverpool, the University is also driving the city’s knowledge economy through close collaboration with fellow universities, industry and the NHS, helping the Liverpool City Region compete in the global business world.

Our aim is to support our students as they become highly employable, creative, and culturally rich graduates, with the capacity to find employment that will enable them to be agents for change in a connected world.
