What is the Year in China?

The Year in China is the University of Liverpool's exciting flagship programme allowing undergraduate students, from every department, the opportunity to spend one year at our fully English speaking joint venture, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), following XJTLU's BA China Studies degree classes.

The focus of the Year in China is Chinese language and culture with two exciting pathways you can follow, based on your interest. You can choose either the China Studies Track which takes place at the Suzhou Campus where you will take courses from the China Studies Degree or the Entrepreneurship Track based at the brand new Taicang Campus where you will take courses from the Entrepreneurship College

View the table below for a summary of the Year in China programme:

Duration

Does it add time to my degree?

Will I study modules from my subject area?

Will it count towards my degree?

When will I go to China?

1 academic year

Yes - degree extended by 1 year

No - you will take China studies and Chinese language modules

No - it's marked on a pass or fail basis

Started your degree before September 2024:

You can choose to go to China either between Years 2 and 3 or after your final year. See our YiC Integrated Masters list for any exceptions to this or programmes where students can choose the timing.

Started your degree from September 2024 onwards:

With the exception of the programmes listed below, you will go to China after your final year of study. Students in Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, Denistry or Health Sciences will go between Years 2 and 3.

During your time at XJTLU you will be studying:

  • Chinese language
  • China Studies – these modules can be on any topic, e.g. Chinese history, politics or culture
  • Depending on your academic department you may have the opportunity to take one degree-related module per semester

You will live in University approved accommodation. See the XJTLU's accommodation pages for example of the residences available.

Please note: Students joining the University from Academic Year 2024/25 onwards will only be able to take Year in China as the final year option. The only exceptions to this are Clinicals and Health Science, who will only be able to participate between Year 2 and 3 (or 3 and 4 for the 5yr programmes). Also note that the search tool will not be updated to reflect this change until September 2024/25.

How will it fit in to my degree?

  • The Year in China is marked on a pass/fail basis, so won't count towards you final degree mark. You must achieve at least 40% in each semester to pass the year. The average mark you achieve for each semester will appear on your transcript
  • Your degree will extend by one year if you participate in the Year in China, e.g. extending a 3 year programme to a 4 year programme
  • The title of your degree would change to 'Subject' with a Year in China (e.g. BA Philosophy with a Year in China)
  • If you don't pass the Year in China, your degree title will revert back to your initial programme title.

Year in China is open to final year students - how does it work?

  • With the exception of Clinical and Health Science degrees, you now have the option to take the Year in China after you have finished your final year of study (as long as your degree programme is compatible with the Year in China)
  • The programme works in exactly the same way as above, however, you simply delay your graduation in order to participate in the programme. For example, if you take the Year in China in the academic year 2024/25, you will graduate in December 2025
  • Students will still be eligible for Student Finance to help fund the Year in China
  • Please note, for students who join the university from September 2024 onwards, Year in China will be available as the final year option only (with the exception of Clinical and Health Science degrees)
