Research Overview

Fola’s research may be captured as an exploration of the role of law in the development of banking and finance in Africa. Her current jurisdictions of interest are Nigeria and England & Wales. She has published widely within the commercial law space (broadly conceived) and has a specific interest in banking regulation, financial and economic crime, and whistleblower protection. Her article was published in the Journal of Business Law (2020), where she considers whether whistleblowers are adequately protected under the Public Interest Disclosures Act 1998. Her work was recently cited by Baroness Kramer, on whether there is a place for a whistleblower reward programme in the UK. The full report may be found here . She is also an invited member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Economic Criminology.

Her recently published monograph is titled Banking Regulation in Africa: The Case of Nigeria and Other Emerging Economies. This book's core jurisdiction focus is Nigeria, and it explores, in detail, the banking regulatory environment. This book also explores the newly enacted Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 2020 as part of this discourse. In 2022, Fola was invited to contribute three chapters on banking law to Principles of Commercial Law. This student-friendly text is useful to students studying commercial law and to those who want an easy understanding of banking law in the UK. She is also the co-editor of an edited book, titled: Bank Insolvency Law in Developing Economies. She is currently working on her second monograph, provisionally titled: Financial and Economic Crime: Regulatory Responses from Nigeria and Kenya.

Research Supervision:
Fola is an experienced external Ph.D. examiner, having examined in South Africa, Nigeria, as well as in England & Wales. She is happy to receive proposals from prospective doctoral students with an interest in banking and financial regulation as well as financial and economic crime.
