"In the School of Law and Social Justice, we are world leaders in our expertise in and commitment towards the protection of human rights. Human rights research at the School of Law and Social Justice is at the core of our identity and mission. Our expertise spans a wide range of areas, including international human rights law, European human rights law, environmental rights including access to water and the clean environment, the rights of migrants and minorities, children’s rights, human rights in the criminal justice system and human rights protection in the digital age. Liverpool human rights experts are renowned academically and play a leading role in advising governments, civil society, international organisations and European institutions in the field of human rights protection. These include the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Council of Europe, the Organisation for the Security and Collaboration in Europe, the European Commission, and the European Parliament.

Our research is cutting-edge, both doctrinal and empirical, and the School has a long tradition to actively contributing in making a difference in the protection of human rights on the ground. Our Law Clinic is at the forefront of providing human rights support to the local community, including in matters of migration, family and education law. As a part of our “International Judge in Residence” Programme we host on an annual basis a judge of the European Court of Human Rights. Judges stay in Liverpool for a week each, shared their experience with our students and staff members. In 2023, we are proud to host our first Liverpool Summer School which will be dedicate to resilience of human rights in times of crisis. It will bring together leading academics and practitioners to Liverpool including the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and former President of the European Court of Human Rights. The School further hosts a world- leading LLM programme in Human Rights Law. We welcome academics, students and practitioners to the School in order to work together to enhance the protection of human rights locally, nationally and globally."
