BUILDING ENGINEERING RESEARCH The design and construction of buildings makes use of the expertise of professionals who are specialists in design, engineering and management. The aim of the School is to provide an educational environment for students of architecture, building environmental engineering and building construction management so that each gains a better understanding of their future role as professionals in the construction industry and its relationship to that of other professionals. Therefore our teaching and research activities cover a wide range, including design history, aesthetics, acoustics and noise control, lighting engineering, computer aided architectural design, application of artificial intelligence. facilities management, construction management for the both the developed and the developing countries, procurement systems, building technology, thermal response of buildings, mechanical and electrical services. Our research on these topics has an international reputation for excellence which is confirmed by the award of prizes and medals and by invitations to speak at research conferences. Since the merger of the two Departments the School has moved towards a leading position in architectural and construction research in the UK. Our research rating of 4 and a research income of £1,000,000 over the last three years confirms this trend.
Major specialised facilities exist for work in the science and engineering areas including controlled environment rooms, noise transmission suites, an anechoic chamber, materials and construction laboratories, a lighting laboratory with artificial sky and a computer laboratory. All are supported by technical staff and workshops, model making facilities etc. Opportunities are available to work in any of the three major computing environments e.g. MSDos./Windows, Macintosh and SUN/Unix. On joining our research school you will enter a challenging, multi-disciplinary environment where specialists in diverse fields are actively working side by side.
