HIGHER DEGREES

The degrees of M.Phil. and Ph.D. are research degrees awarded on submission of a thesis which is judged by the examiners to be of the appropriate standard to candidates who have followed an approved programme of research studies.

In addition to research for the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees, it is possible for candidates who already have an architectural qualification equivalent to Part 2 of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to study for the Master of Architecture (M.Arch). This may be either a thesis or a design project.

To be admitted to study for an M.Phil and possibly a Ph.D. you will need a good honours degree in an appropriate subject - architecture, building, engineering, science or related disciplines - and for M.Arch.you will need to be qualified at RIBA Part 2 level. In addition you will need a suitable qualification in the English Language, obtained either before coming to Liverpool or in the English Language Unit of the University before starting your research.

Students intending to work for the degree of Ph.D. will register for a M.Phil. degree initially. A formal review of the progress of each student will be carried out at the end of each year, at which written work will be appraised and the student will be interviewed by a panel of senior staff. If progress is satisfactory in the first year the registration can be changed to Ph.D.
