About

Personal Statement

Dr. Louise Oni has always had a love for science and she graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2003 marking the start of her medical career. She has developed an interest in paediatric immune mediated renal diseases and works clinically as a Paediatric Nephrology Consultant in the NHS. She is employed by the University as a member of the Child Health Research Team at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital who are based in the state of the art ‘Institute in the Park’ building. She has developed an inter-disciplinary, collaborative ‘Kidney Injury and Inflammation in Liverpool (KIIL)’ network that includes translational researchers from across the region. She is currently developing her own independent research group focused on investigating childhood lupus nephritis and Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (previously known as Henoch Schonlein Purpura). As a member of the Institute of Translational Medicine, her work is based on finding answers to clinical questions using appropriate research methodolgy and relaying those questions back to the patient again in a so-called 'Bench to bedside approach'. She is currently working on standardising the care for these conditions as a foundation for future clinical trials and methods to interrogate the scientific origins of the renal inflammation. She works in close partnership with the Clinical Academic Department of Paediatric Rheumatology and is a member of the Experimental Arthritis Treatment Centre for children (EATC4C) group.

Dr. Oni has always had an active role in teaching including undergraduate medical students, members of the multi-disciplinary team, postgraduate medical trainees, patients and their families, and nephrology colleagues at educational meetings. In 2018, she was awarded a Health Education Award (HEA) Fellowship to acknowledge her high teaching standards and she continues to engage in effective continuing professional development (CPD).
