About the department
The Department conducts internationally recognised research on the pathogenesis of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract - to improve the health and welfare of people and animals world-wide.
We concentrate on “translational” research: taking advances in basic medical research out of the laboratory and into the hospital clinic ‘from the bench to bedside’.
This involves a whole range of experimental techniques, from mechanistic studies involving cell-lines through to patient studies and clinical trials.
Gastroenterology laboratory research
Laboratory research is based mainly on the University campus in the Henry Wellcome Laboratory of Molecular & Cellular Gastroenterology.
The Department also has strong research links with other key centres across the University, including:
- Liverpool Cancer Research UK Centre
- Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
- Liverpool Glycobiology Centre
- The National Zoonoses Research Centre
- Centre for Integrative Mammalian Biology
Clinical research and trials
We conduct clinical research and trials at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre Royal and at the Liverpool University Hospital.
