CSIS launches new seminar series

Starting in August 2025, CSIS will host a new seminar series, called 'Legacies of Enslavement: Transatlantic Dialogues on History and Justice'.
The series is an important critical intervention in the field. It also complements previous events hosted by the CSIS, including lectures, panels, policy launches, film screenings, and art exhibitions, among others, all designed to educate and engage both academic and non-academic audiences.
With a primary focus on the legacies of slavery in the US, Legacies of Enslavement will explore the cultural and social impacts of the slave trade on all societies involved, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between scholars internationally. Some of the themes that the series will cover include:
- The growth of mass imprisonment and policies in the criminal justice system that disproportionately affect African American communities
- The legacies of institutions (including universities) benefitting directly from enslaved labour and wealth generated from commodities produced through enslavement
- The memorialisation and presentation of these difficult histories in online and physical repositories
Topics will be covered through an ‘in conversation’ format, facilitating collaboration between scholars based at universities in both the UK and the US, and the development of their valuable research in this area.
