Aria: Enhancing My Surgical Skills

Posted on: 15 May 2025 by Richard Finch in Student experiences

Aria Walters is a third-year medical student and an aspiring plastic surgeon, who has recently completed the Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) course at The Royal College of Surgeons of England with support from our Employability Fund.

During the course Aria covered a wide range of essential surgical techniques, including surgical scrubbing, suturing methods, knot tying, and cyst excision. These courses are essential when applying for surgical training, as they allow student to demonstrate commitment and develop practical skills.

We were pleased to be able to support Aria in completing the course by covering the full cost of the fees and travel expenses through our EQ+ Employability Fund.

Aria said “I’m incredibly grateful to the Careers & Employability team for offering this bursary. It was a fantastic opportunity to build confidence in foundational procedures, develop my technical skills and receive personalised feedback on my technique. Many of my friends were also able to attend this course, which we wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise, thanks to the Employability Fund.
