About

Personal Statement

I am a professor of primary care in the Department of Primary Care and Mental Health in the University of Liverpool. I previously worked in Cardiff and then Bangor Universities, and was director of research and development for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. I work as a GP in Plas Menai, Llanfairfechan in North Wales for one day per week. My research programme crosses the boundaries between primary and secondary care; physical and mental health; health and social care. Research projects include the rehabilitation of chronic disease such as hip fracture in the frail elderly, angina, osteoarthritis and cancer; encouraging physical activity in sedentary individuals with long-term conditions; innovative models of health and social care delivery. I have research expertise in the co-production and evaluation of complex interventions, pragmatic randomised controlled trials, feasibility studies, mixed-methods process evaluations and systematic reviews. I am clinical lead for the Institute of Population Health, and contribute to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching. I would be pleased to hear from potential PhD students interested in research in the following areas:
1. Complex conditions with a combination of biological, psychological and social components, multi-morbidity and polypharmacy
2. Community-based rehabilitation for people with long-term conditions
3. Promotion of physical activity in primary care populations with long-term conditions
