NIHR Research Design Service

The Research Design Service provides academic support and guidance to researchers and the NHS about competitive research grant applications.

About the RDS

The Research Design Service North West (RDS NW) offers free and confidential advice to health and social care researchers on funding applications to national, peer-reviewed funding competitions.

This includes schemes such as the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit, Personal Awards Schemes and Programme Grants as well as opportunities from major funders such as the Medical Research Council (MRC) and charitable organisations such as The Wellcome Trust.

The aim of the service is to increase the number of successful applications for funding for applied people-focused health and social care research.

The service is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) as part of a network of 10 regional Research Design Services in England. Research Design Service North West is made up of three teams:

  • Cumbria and Lancashire Local Team hosted by University of Lancaster
  • Mersey and Cheshire Local Team hosted by University of Liverpool
  • Greater Manchester Local Team hosted by University of Manchester
