Dr Nicola Bermingham is Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Liverpool. Her research lies at the intersection of sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, and Hispanic and Lusophone linguistics, with a particular focus on Galicia and Cape Verde. Her work examines language policy, migration and education in multilingual and postcolonial contexts.

She is the principal investigator of the British Academy–funded project Monolingual Schools in Multilingual Societies: Rethinking Language and Education in Cape Verde (2023–2025).

Dr Bermingham is Editor of the Modern Languages Open Linguistics Section and Assistant Editor of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies. She served as Chair of the International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society (2019–2023) and is a member of the AHRC Peer Review College.

Dr Bermingham was the Hispanic Studies representative for the University Council for Languages (2020-2025). She is also a founding member of the Language Policy Committee of the Society of Spanish Researchers in the UK (CERU), which promotes multilingualism in research communication and professional practice.

Dr Bermingham welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD students interested in sociolinguistics, language policy, multilingualism, migration and education.
