Senior Learning Technologist

About

Tony is a Senior Learning Technologist and a Senior Research Technical Professional in the School of Engineering. He is the UK & Ireland regional co-lead for CDIO, an international engineering education initiative.

Tony started his career as an Analytical Chemistry Apprentice at Alfred H. Knight before joining the University as Teaching & Research Technician in 2006. He has 15 years of technical experience having previously worked to support a number of varied research groups with the design and manufacture of experimental equipment before becoming the technical lead for the Additive Manufacturing Production and Research Facility. In this time he also supported the school’s teaching activities, developing and delivering innovative learning experiences.

Wanting to promote the integral role technical staff play in both teaching and research, Tony began to work more widely across the university, becoming the founding chair of the Liverpool Technical Network and joining the University’s Technician Commitment Steering Group.

In 2018, in recognition of his teaching activities, he became the first technician at UoL to gain Fellowship to the Higher Education Academy. This presented an opportunity to redirect his career path to focus more on teaching and to take advantage of the University’s Academic Development programmes, culminating in the completion of an MA in Academic Practice in 2023. These development opportunities enabled Tony to take a role as a Learning Technologist in 2021.

Working closely with academic colleagues and other educational developers, his current work focuses on blending pedagogic and technical knowledge to find innovative ways to engage learners and broaden engineering education.
