Wageningen University

Wageningen UR is a collaboration between Wageningen University and the DLO foundation. ‘To explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life’ -That is the mission of Wageningen UR (University & Research centre). With 6,500 staff and 10,000 students from over 100 countries work everywhere around the world in the domain of healthy food and living environment for governments and the business community-at-large.  The strength of Wageningen UR lies in its ability to join the forces of specialised research institutes and Wageningen University. It also lies in the combined efforts of the various fields of natural and social sciences. This union of expertise leads to scientific breakthroughs that can quickly be put into practice and be incorporated into education. This is the Wageningen Approach.

The ENP group is active in the field of environmental social science and policy research. The research program of ENP is beyond doubt global in character. This is reflected in the content of the research program, in the PhD research, and in the composition the group. ENP's research program focuses on three specific research themes; Sustainable Production and Consumption; Sustainable Natural Resource Use; and Global Environmental Change. These themes are related to both Social theory and Social methodology.

Key Personnel

Jan P.M. van Tatenhove is Professor of Marine Governance and Associate Professor at the Environmental Policy Group at the Department of Social Sciences at Wageningen University and Research Centre.

His research focuses on (1) Innovative forms of EU Marine Governance; (2) processes of political modernisation and the innovation of governance arrangements in several policy domains, such as marine spatial planning, fisheries policy, shipping, oil-and gas production, environmental policy, nature conservation (3) Accountability and legitimacy; (4) Reflexive policymaking and the interplay of formal and informal practices.

He is the supervisor of several marine governance PhD-projects, such as: ‘Trust and new modes of fisheries governance’; ‘Engaging Science in decision making for the Wadden Sea’; ‘Informational governance on marine controversies’; ‘Eco-dynamic designing in different governance settings’; and ‘Use of knowledge in building with nature projects. Besides the ODEMM project he participates in the two other EU FP7-projects (MASPNOSE and GAP2).
