I gained a masters degree in pharmaceutical sciences (MpharmSci) from the University of Hull in 2010. I subsequently completed a PhD at the University of Liverpool in functional and comparative genomics. My thesis centred around the biosynthetic pathway of galanthamine, a medicinally important plant alkaloid. I then took a post-doctoral position as a bioinformatician at the Center for Genomics-Enabled Plant Science at Michigan State University under Dr Kevin Childs. Here I worked on a variety of projects including but not limited to genome structural and functional annotation, RNA-Seq analysis and pipeline development. I returned to Liverpool in 2016 to take up a position within Prof Christiane Hertz-Fowler’s group.
