Research

Research Interest 1

Post-genomic and reverse genetic approaches to understanding the mechanisms of response by animals to a range of environmental stressors (cold, hypoxia, ecotoxicological). Particularly in the use of biophysical, biochemical and molecular approaches based on a range of post-genomic technologies, from microarrays in 2000-2005 to nextgen DNA sequencing applications more recently. Currently, my lab is adapting ribosomal footprint techniques to understand the proteome-wide translational responses of tissues to different kinds of environmental stress. This translatome, which is devised through mass sequencing of protected footprints held within ribosomes, give a genome-wide indication of the types of proteins being translated at specific times in the early and later phases of stress response systems.

Research Interest 2

Development of novel bio-molecular detection techniques, involving the use of microscale devices, microarray printing, aptamers etc.. Engagement with start-up companies.

Development of post-genomics service centres

This has involved rolling out a genomics service provision to a wider UK and international research community in relation to advanced post-genomic technologies. Initially, this was based on the early implementation (2000-5) of microarray technology based on programme funding from NERC-UK, followed by incorporation of this facility into a NERC service centre, now called NERC Biomolecular Analysis Facility (NBAF).

Subsequently, in conjunction with Prof Neil Hall and Christiane Hertz-Fowler, this was expanded into what is now known as the Centre for Genomic Research, based on core funding from both NERC and MRC, and capital funding from BBSRC (ALERT13, 14) and the University of Liverpool. This provided 454, SOLiD and Illumina based sequencing platforms, and more recently, has invested in the PacBio SMRT platform. The CGR has lab and informatics teams that can provide all services from design, to implementation and write-up.

Since 2013 the CGR has expanded its technical remit to include synthetic biology (GeneMill, BBSRC-funded) led by Prof Anthony Hall, a Clinical Genomics Facility, linking the CGR to NHS Institutions in the NW region, led by Prof Hertz-Fowler, and a Single Cell Genomics Facility led by Dr Alistair Darby.
