About us

The Institute of Integrative Biology lies at the heart of a thriving biomedical science campus in Liverpool and strives to research biology with impact, from genes to ecosystems.

Based primarily in the Biosciences Building with additional sites at Leahurst and Ness Gardens, we provide one of the most vibrant and integrated biosciences environments in the UK.

 The Biosciences Building, Liverpool

The Institute is home to three departments; the Department of Biochemistry, the Department of Evolution, Ecology and Behaviour and the Department of Functional and Comparative Genomics. Our departments work collaboratively across our four cross-cutting themes.

The Institute comprises 220 staff (including 75 Principal Investigators) and 150 postgraduate students. With a research income of ~£9.5m annually, our scientists deliver ground-breaking biology research.

Ness GardensNess Gardens, Wirral

We have established world-class research facilities that support scientists across all of our key research themes. We host several of the Faculty's shared research platforms, including key elements of the national research infrastructure

Through our research partnerships with companies such as Unilever and AstraZeneca, strong global links into major research enterprises in Japan, Brazil, USA and China and our scientific outreach, we are having true impact across the world.

Our staff deliver on research and provide research-led teaching. Our postgraduate students enjoy a first class experience with strong supervision and mentorship in an exciting research environment.

We are one of only 11 academic departments in the UK to hold an Athena SWAN Gold Award. This is evidence of our full commitment to providing opportunities for development to all our staff, regardless of background or gender.
