I am a Professor of Paediatric Infection, and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust. My research interests are a)understanding the host response to serious bacterial infection, b) improving the diagnosis of serious bacterial infection using host protein biomarkers, c) improving antimicrobial stewardship using biomarker-guided algorithms, and d) recognition of deterioration in hospitalised children. I work and collaborate locally, nationally and globally.
My research career to date covers experimental medicine, clinical trials and implementation science and spans the full translational spectrum from innovation to applied health. I am passionate about building research capacity within undergraduates, trainees and NHS senior clinicians. My clinical research is patient-focused, needs-driven and science-led. My research is funded by NIHR and H2020.
