MRC Centre for Drug Safety Science
Theme(s)
Health & Wellbeing
Website
A joint venture between the universities of Liverpool and Manchester
to bring together a critical mass of knowledge and technologies
that will advance our understanding of adverse drug reactions.
Through collaboration between researchers, industry and
regulatory authorities, the Centre’s mission is to create a world-
leading centre for the investigation of fundamental mechanisms
of clinically important adverse drug reactions with the overall aim
of preventing such reactions by improved drug selection, drug
design and more informed patient selection. The Centre is funded
by the Medical Research Council.
MRC-Arthritis Research UK Centre
for Integrated Research into
Musculoskeletal Ageing
Theme(s)
Health & Wellbeing
Website
/
A collaboration between the universities of Liverpool, Newcastle
and Sheffield. The aim of the Centre is to understand the processes
and effects of ageing in tissues of the musculoskeletal system
which lead to osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and muscle weakness.
It examines how ageing contributes to disease and how this can be
treated or prevented.
The Centre investigates new ways of preventing the deterioration
of the musculoskeletal tissues that occurs as we age to help
preserve mobility and independence in older people. It brings
together complementary and outstanding expertise in skeletal
muscle, bone, cartilage and tendon biology, ageing research,
nutrition and exercise interventions and clinical excellence in
musculoskeletal disorders.
MRC North West Hub for Trials
Methodology Research
Theme(s)
Health & Wellbeing
Website
A collaboration with the universities of Lancaster and Bangor,
funded by the Medical Research Council. The Liverpool-based hub
provides a focus for research in the North West region around trials
methodology. Its members form a world-class centre of excellence to
investigate methodological issues facing the clinical trials
community. It strives to improve patient care by improving the
validity and relevance of the healthcare evidence base.
The Hub provides expertise in areas such as drug safety, medi-
cines for children, epilepsy and cancer. This expertise includes
research into the design and analysis of both early- and late-phase
trials, including innovative adaptive design and pharmacokinetic
studies, and issues related to the patient perspective, including
methods to improve recruitment and retention.
