Expertise
The University’s Institute of Popular Music has
substantial expertise working with companies, groups
and individuals to develop compositions, performances,
and musicians’ skills and careers. We collaborate with
musicians in and outside of recording studios and work
together on projects which encourage reflection on
place, heritage and local identity. These projects
involve music and heritage organisations who often
go on to use our materials in exhibitions, events and
ongoing activities.
We have strong ties with local museums and cultural
organisations and have experience in curating
exhibitions and music festivals (for example a major
exhibition of Liverpool music heritage, staged through a
partnership between the Institute of Popular Music and
National Museums Liverpool, which attracted close to
500,000
visitors). We also advise local, national and
international museums on policies regarding the
collection and use of music; we established a
professional network to help these organisations to
share their knowledge and resources and develop future
collecting and outreach activities and exhibition planning.
Working with the public and local communities, we have
produced film documentaries, including community-
based films about music heritage. In addition, we put on
lectures and events including performances of film and
classical art music. We also have technical and
conceptual expertise to stage multimedia, sonic art
events designed to engage the public and prompt
reflection on specific issues and concerns.
We are open to collaborative exploration of music, sound
and its influence in society as an art form and as an
industry. Working with public and private sector
organisations to research, develop and promote local
and regional music industries; our research highlights
how some companies have contributed to music
heritage and social, cultural and economic life.

Expertise
Liverpool develops new and powerful models for
multidisciplinary research on children and childhoods
of culturally, economically, politically and geograph-
ically marginalised people.
Drawing from a breadth of disciplines, including media
and communications, sociology, criminology, civic
design, social work, anthropology, psychology and
education, we have a wealth of expertise in research
methodologies and experience of conducting studies
on children and child development.
We work with external partners and agencies to
conduct studies and advise them on numerous
child-related issues such as: child, maternal and
family health and wellbeing; education, educational
policy and cognitive development in children and
young people; regeneration; criminology and
victimisation; the role of the media and
communication; and how images of childhood
are embedded in children’s literature.
Our research also provides evidence to support
innovative ways to preserve and develop cultural
and community identities.
