Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor

Thank you for your interest in joining the University of Liverpool.

As we look ahead to 2031, when our University will celebrate 150 years of creativity, innovation and global impact, this is a truly exciting time to join the original redbrick.

Our mission since 1881 has been the advancement of learning and ennoblement of life and the opportunity to further this aim now, with our teaching and research already transforming lives both here in our
renowned home city and all around the world, has never been greater.

We are a 300,000 strong international community of staff, students and alumni with a shared passion for a University and a place that stands out from the crowd. Innovation is part of our identity, from the world’s first public radio transmission by Professor Oliver Lodge in 1894 to our cutting-edge expertise across a remarkable breadth of research activities today. So too is community; from our award-winning work supporting local school pupils to aspire to and access higher education, through to the global reach of our teaching programme, exemplified by our ground-breaking partnership with Xi’an Jiaotong - Liverpool University in China.

Outward-looking, pioneering, welcoming, diverse and inclusive, we are proud to share many characteristics with the city of Liverpool and, also, to share many of its priorities. We are at the heart of the city region’s future ambitions, which will bring the University’s research in areas including advanced materials, digital, health and sustainability to the fore. But our reach is without borders, as we work with industry and academia nationally and internationally to make new discoveries and achieve scientific breakthroughs
that benefit societies everywhere. We will strengthen the links between our civic and global activities, making advances in shared challenges of regional, national and global importance.

The following pages provide you with further insight into how the University is run, our strengths and vision for the future, and will help you to understand how this role fits within the overall structure of the organisation. You will be joining at an exciting time for the University as we prepare our new institutional strategy that will take us up to our 150th anniversary in 2031. We hope it will inspire you to join our
thriving Liverpool community and we look forward to hearing from you.

Professor Tim Jones
