Downloading and Installing LaTeX
I'm sorry about the problems with the install CDs: the latest version
may or may not work. I think the most likely cause is that the CD
writer on my computer is faulty.
In any case, everything on the CD can be downloaded from the
internet. Here are instructions:
- Have a copy of the installation
instructions in front of you. The
most recent version (linked from
here) is the one I handed out on 8th
October. Of course it's important to
follow these instructions carefully.
- The file basic-miktex-2.7.3164.exe in step (2) of the
installation instructions can be
downloaded
from http://miktex.org/2.7/Setup.aspx. Click
the Download button for the "Basic MikTeX 2.7" Installer
(82.33MB).
- The file gs863w32.exe in step (3) of the installation
instructions can be downloaded
from http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/GPL/gpl863.htm
(look at the bottom of the page under the heading "Microsoft
Windows").
- The file gsv49w32.exe in step (4) of the installation
instructions can be downloaded
from http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/get49.htm
(near the top of the page).
- For the TeXShell files in step (5), there are four files to
obtain. Three of them (the TeXShell program itself and two help
files) can be obtained
from http://www.projectory.de/texshell/
(download WinTeXShell32.zip, the first link on the page,
extract the three files and copy them to e.g. C:\Program
Files\texshell\). (If you're not happy unzipping files, the
version of TeXShell on the CD is probably good...) Download the fourth
file, texshell.ini, and save it in
the same folder as the other three. Make sure you follow step (5)
of the installation instructions carefully.
