The majority of people on this planet live within a relatively short distance of the ocean. Populations and the levels of industrialisation are rapidly increasing, with the consequence that the pressures on the marine environment arising from development, resource extraction and waste disposal are also mounting. The marine environment, particularly the coastal zone, is suffering from many threats and over the last few years the research of the marine pollution group at Liverpool has focused largely on organic contaminants of the marine environment. This study of marine pollution inevitably encompasses many other aspects of scientific study including the physics and biology of marine processes together with those aspects of social and industrial development that generate the potential threats.
