Advice on Travel

There is some general information about travel to Liverpool University on the webpage

http://www.liv.ac.uk/maps/visiting/

including links to other website which have specific information about airports, trains and buses.

There are maps of the University and the Halls of Residence available from the links on

http://www.liv.ac.uk/maps/

The Hall of Residence where accommodation is provided is Derby and Rathbone Hall, on the ‘Greenbank’ site. It is close to Sefton Park, Penny Lane and the Smithdown Road/Allerton Road shopping street, where there are supermarkets as well as smaller shops and many restaurants.

From Liverpool Airport or Lime Street Station (the main line rail station) to the Hall of Residence the best method is by taxi (costing about GBP 10-15). There are many bus services too but strangers to the city will find it easier to use a taxi. The university, and in particular the Department of Mathematical Sciences, is within 10-15 minutes walk of Lime Street station.

From Manchester Airport to Liverpool Lime Street station there is a train service via Manchester (with some trains direct to Liverpool). As a general rule with UK rail you should buy return tickets (round-trip tickets) rather than single tickets (one-way tickets) since this is much cheaper and return tickets are usually valid for a month from the date of outward travel. Train schedules are available from

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

There isn’t usually much advantage in buying tickets online; note that if you buy an advance ticket you will be restricted to travelling on specified trains. Reservations on the trains from Manchester Airport are not needed.

From London the trains are hourly from Euston Station. Again reservations are not normally needed. A single ticket and a return ticket from London to Liverpool cost about the same, and will be very expensive if you travel at peak times. If you book ahead (advance tickets) you will be restricted to travelling on specified trains (and then you will automatically have a reservation on those trains).
