Occluded Terminators

On the right, you see a partly occluded square moving left to right. On the left, the red bands have been removed. Note that each of the visible parts of the square actually moves up and down. Presumably, the visual system interprets the up-down motion of the line terminators as being due to occlusion, and discards it from the integration process. The right-left global motion then results from integrating the local orthogonal components of each visible part (Lorenceau & Shiffrar, 1992).
