TiO2 (Rutile)

The rutile structure can be considered as a distorted hcp array of O2- ions with the Ti4+ ions occupying the octahedral holes. The O2- ions have slightly distorted trigonal planar coordination. This can be seen in the extended structure below. The unit cell contains: [1+{8x(1/8)}] = 2 Ti4+ ions and [2+{4x(1/2)}] = 4 O2- ions |
