Merthyr Express - Saturday 25 March 1916

OBITUARY. - We have to record the death of Mr. Phillip Powell 27 Broad-street, who was accidentally killed by a fall of roof at the Bedlinog Collieries of Messrs Guest, Keen, and Nettlefolds, Thursday the 9th inst., and who leaves a widow and two sons. Deceased, previous to being employed at the collieries, was a plate mill roller in Ifor Works, and held that post until the mills closed down and were transferred to Cardiff. The remains were interred at Pant Cemetery on the following Tuesday, and the funeral, which was for gentlemen only, was largely attended, and was eloquent of the respect in which the deceased was held by the workmen and tradesmen of Dowlais. Rev. Luther Jones, Beulah, officiated, and Rev. H. Ellis, Moriah, offered prayer at the graveside. The late Mr. Powell had been a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church for over 30 years. The mourners included Messrs A. Powell (son) W. Hall (stepson), both of Cardiff; Wm. Powell, Abergavenny, and Chris. Powell, Bargoed (brothers), T. Jones, A. Smith, Abercynon (cousins), Thos. Thomas, Dd. Thomas, and Jno. Thomas (brothers-in-law), T. Jones, D. T. Evans, D. S. Jones, D. Lewis, T. Phillips, and H. Williams (nephews); A. Dart, Cardiff. and F. Morgans, Merthyr. The deceased's widow wishes to express her gratitude to friends and neighbours for the sympathy and kindness extended by them in her sad bereavment.

Phillip Powell, and his brothers William and Christopher, are cousins of Alfred Smith and Thomas Jones of Abercynon. The link is that Alfred's wife Sarah Jane Jones, and her brother Thomas Jones, have Margaret Davies, born Llanwenarth 1828, as a mother. Margaret has a sister, Jane, born Llanwenarth 1830, who married Daniel Powell and gave birth to the Powell family.
