PRACTICAL 5: A Wheezy Adolescent

ELISA - an important clinical analytical technique

The manual pages for practical 5 are available for browsing here on the Web or can be downloaded in Word or PDF format and printed out. The advantage of the Web version is that it contains useful hyperlinks to other practical pages and Web sites. The Web version is also split into two parts: Theory and Methods:

Web resources covering respiratory physiology and asthma can be found on the relevant Faculty Phase 1 Web resource page

A Tutorial covering basic immunology, antibody structure and ELISA assays can be found as part of The Biology Project of the University of Arizona, which you met before in Practical 1, while another useful Tutorial on lung toxicology, covering lung development, respiratory toxicology, passive smoking, asthma and lung cancer can also be found in the Biology Project.

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology, University of Leicester, offers a "virtual ELISA" for you to try. This interactive tutorial allows use of the ELISA assay to test for CMV antibodies, a serological test for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection.

Finally, for those with a particular interest, abstracts of two articles describing the use of an ELISA assay for the measurement of serum cotinine (the subject of this practical) can be found by clicking here and here.
