Year 10 Dangerous Science Summer School

In July each year the University of Liverpool offers its hugely successful Dangerous Science Summer School for Year 10 students from its Key Account schools. Selected students will have the opportunity to sample what it’s like to study science at university and be involved in exciting science activities that are fun, informative and interactive. Sessions aim to motivate, enthuse and inspire young people, whilst at the same time highlighting the progression from their own school curriculum, to studying at higher education and a science based career beyond.

Programme outline

Attending young people will already have an interest in STEM subjects and the summer school aims to develop these feelings further. The students will have the chance to opt into academic taster sessions in subjects that interest them and gain a greater understanding of what higher education can offer. As well as the opportunity to work with university academics and undergraduates, we also recognise the positive impact, both academically and personally, that a summer school experience can have on a young person. The summer school aims to motivate, excite and inspire young people, providing them with a unique experience on which to base future educational decisions. Overall the programme aims to show that working in cutting edge scientific fields requires expert skills and knowledge - skills and knowledge that can be gained at university, and can lead to a rewarding and exciting career. Staff from the Widening Participation and Outreach team will also be delivering practical workshops on themes such as student finance, time management and student life, to remove some of the fear around progressing to higher education.
