The Great Read

The Great Read 2020

Join us for a Great Read by downloading our specially-commissioned e-book as part of our Liverpool Welcome and Foundation Week. As you prepare to join us, or if you have already returned, take some time to enjoy the four short stories we have chosen to inspire you. The four stories are written by authors with very different life experiences but who are all shaped by their own experience of change, spanning boundaries of generations, gender, class, national identity and religion. What will they mean to you?

The four stories we have chosen for our Great Read are:

The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

A classic Sherlock Holmes mystery, considered to be one of Doyle's finest works and a defining part of detective fiction.

A Mild Attack of Locusts by Doris Lessing

An absorbing tale of the power of nature.

The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

A moving story about racial identity and the intersections of gender, class and race.

The Sentinel by Arthur C Clarke

An unnamed lunar geologist spots an artefact that will change the course of human history.
