More than Bricks and Mortar

This gallery explores the early history of the University of Liverpool, when it was known as University College Liverpool - a time of innovation, ambition, and academic beginnings.

Opened in 1892, the Victoria Building was one of the University’s first purpose-built spaces. Designed to accommodate a growing college, it housed the School of Arts, the first university library, and shared spaces for staff and students.

This exhibition brings the University’s early story to life, spotlighting key figures like architect Alfred Waterhouse, generous donors, and one of the first students — Elizabeth Beckett - in a compelling character study.
