4-year Wellcome Ph.D. Programme Studies in Cellular and Molecular Physiology.
The study of the cellular and molecular basis of cell function and regulation is one of the major growth areas in biology. This will continue as high content data from –omic, imaging and pre-clinical approaches provide substantial resources for developing a systems-level, physiological perspective aimed at understanding how molecular, cellular, tissue and organismal level functions are co-ordinated normally and then become dysregulated in disease.
The Physiological Laboratory in Liverpool is widely recognised as an international centre of excellence for research in cellular and molecular physiology. The Liverpool 4-year Ph.D. Programme was the first to be funded by the Wellcome Trust.
The Physiological Laboratory in Liverpool is widely recognised as an international centre of excellence for research in cellular and molecular physiology. Our Ph.D. school was the first Wellcome Trust funded 4-years Ph.D. school in the UK (established in Liverpool in 1994). We have considerable experience in providing high quality Ph.D. training based on the exceptionally strong research expertise of our Department.
Liverpool and surroundings
Architecturally Liverpool is one of the most impressive cities in the UK. Liverpool has the largest concentration of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings of high architectural value outside of London. Recently its waterfront and the historic city area were designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Liverpool contains a remarkable collection of art galleries, museums and theatres. Our city also has a rich variety of historic pubs, night clubs and restaurants. Liverpool is an excellent place for those who like parks and botanic gardens. It is also close to two impressive national parks – Lake District and Snowdonia National Park.
Structure of the course
During the first year students are registered for an MRES and experience three 10-week rotations in the laboratories of different Wellcome Faculty members. The rotation projects are supplemented by training workshops and a lecture programme covering research topics and techniques relevant to biomedical scientists. NB. Registration for the MRES qualification is optional although the structure of the first year will largely be identical for students that opt in or out. In the summer of Year 1 students select a laboratory for their Ph.D. and join this research group for Years 2-4. Throughout the PhD, students have access to a wide range of support and training options to facilitate progress in their PhD research.
~100 students have successfully graduated from our Ph.D. Programme since it was first established. Almost all of our students have published at least one research article with an average of 3.5 publications/student. ~70% of graduates remain in directly related science-based careers 6 years post-graduation. 20% of all graduates have achieved independent principal investigator status in academia or industry with many others securing influential positions in a wide range of science-related careers spanning the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, sales, consultancy, publishing, communications, teaching and research management sectors.
