The Liverpool Law Clinic has concluded its activities for the 2024/25 academic year, following the departure of the final cohort of summer students. The Clinic provides free legal advice to members of the public while giving Liverpool Law School students valuable experience working on real-life cases.

Throughout the year, the Clinic provided advice and representation in legal areas including immigration, family law and Special Educational Needs (SEN). A total of 436 law students worked directly with clients through both Clinic modules and volunteering opportunities, supporting 490 appointments and assisting over 380 clients.

The Clinic remains a vital source of legal advice and support for the community. Key achievements from the year include:

  • Successfully supporting a client in an appeal to the Upper Tribunal in the case that resulted in TM and SM v Liverpool City Council, which highlighted the importance of considering a child’s wishes and feelings in school placement decisions.
  • Launching an exclusions project to assist parents of children permanently excluded from school.
  • Working in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University to launch a public legal education project for parents considering making applications to the family court.
  • Providing evidence to the Administrative Court in the case [2025] EWHC 316 (admin), relating to the removal of special family reunion rights for sponsors with leave to remain on statelessness grounds.

Reflecting on their experience, one student said: “The Clinic was a fantastic experience, and I would definitely do it again”. Opportunities for new students to get involved will be advertised in the upcoming academic year, ensuring the Clinic continues to provide valuable experience and support to the community.

Please note, the Clinic is currently closed to new clients for the summer period.
