Football Economics and Analytics

This module will enable students to develop a critical understanding of the principles of economics and their application to the football industries. Students will develop a critical understanding of the similarities and differences between football and conventional industries. The module will explore how economics principles can be used to develop an appreciation of the various stakeholders in football including, but not limited to, consumers; football clubs; leagues and federations; and broadcasters. Students will be able to use economic principles to evaluate decision-making across the industry. Students will explore a range of football specific topics including, but not limited to, competitive balance; uncertainty of outcome; football players’ labour market; managerial dismissal and consequences of managerial change; stadium attendance; and television audience demand.

Additionally, the module will also enable students to develop an understanding of analytics and their application to football. The module will expose students to a range of econometric and analytical techniques. Students will develop an appreciation of how these are used to model different phenomena in football and how they can be used to inform managerial decision-making.
