Antimicrobial Resistance

Antibiotics are medicines that kill or inhibit bacteria and are used to help treat infections in humans and animals. Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics – this is known as Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and this is one of the biggest health challenges that we face today.

The more an antibiotic is used, the more likely AMR is to occur so overreliance on or misuse of antibiotics exacerbates the problem. Currently, AMR kills 700,000 people per year globally.  AMR research investigates systems to protect antibiotics or finds methods to reduce the creation of and spread of antibiotic resistance.
