Applications open for Scholarship for Women in Data Science
The University’s Computational Biology Facility (CBF) has launched a scholarship aimed at women wanting to retrain in data science. The scholarship would allow access to all of the CBF’s courses for a period of five years.
This annual award aims to bridge the gap for women in the field of data science, with statistics showing that less than 25% of data professionals are women. The scholarship is open worldwide and is aimed at all women but particularly those coming back from a career break or looking to re-train. With the majority of CBF courses available online, it provides access to all CBF professional courses for a period of five years and access to a peer-peer support community to nurture the recipient’s skill-set and expertise.
Dr Eva Caamano Gutierrez, CBF Manager said: “Teams that are diverse perform better, are more ingenious and innovative. This gender gap is really a crisis that we should all try to address.
“From the CBF we are launching several initiatives, ranging from inspiring younger generations via our public engagement and widening participation network to pursue STEM; to incorporating better recruitment strategies to appeal to women and creating training opportunities that are truly accessible by the scientific community.
“In this field keeping up to date with developments is crucial and the scholarship provides access to training in statistics, programming and overall data science.”

The deadline for applications is 27th February 2023.
