Work experience opportunities

We organise regular careers events and routinely play host to law firms who wish to come and meet our students. There is an annual ‘Law Fair’ at which Liverpool University students have the opportunity to meet future legal employers. Academic staff in the Law School as well as the University Careers and Employability Service offer invaluable careers advice and support. Every year, many of our students are awarded funding and contracts from Inns of Court and solicitors’ firms for their professional training.

Undergraduate students can develop their legal skills through a number of extra-curricular activities such as mentoring by members of the legal profession, mooting and negotiation competitions. The Student Pro Bono Society provides careers information and work experience opportunities in local advocacy organisations, including the Liverpool Central Citizens Advice Bureau.

The Student Legal and Bar Societies also organise a range of social and networking activities as well as professional visits to Courts and Chambers.

The School arranges a range of placement opportunities, typically offering students the chance to spend two-three weeks during the vacation working within an international law firm or alongside in-house lawyers in major commercial companies. In addition, a limited number of year-long placements in China are offered to students on a competitive basis.

The Liverpool Law Clinic: The Law Clinic gives many students their first taste of professional practice: students work under the supervision of a lawyer, meeting the client, researching their problem and drafting advice. Confidentiality, clear communication and customer satisfaction are all emphasised as essential elements of the Clinic’s service. Participation in the Clinic helps students experience the practical aspect of Law whilst contributing towards their degree through the completion of the Clinical Legal Skills module.

Above all, we focus on making you employable. You will have access to specialist advice through the School’s Legal Careers Advisor and professional mentorship from practicing city-based solicitors and barristers. You can also hone your legal skills through our supervised Law Clinic, dispensing legal advice to real clients, and meet future employers on campus at the annual Liverpool Law Fair.

Jamie Boyle
Law LLB (Hons)

The University of Liverpool really has met my expectations. I expected a challenge but I also expected to be rewarded for my hardwork and that has happened. I've done plenty of extra-curricular activities. I've mooted, I've marshalled, I've been to Lincoln's Inn. I've done a mock bail application, so I've had plenty of opportunities to progress my expertise further.
