This programme was previously named MSc in Advanced Computer Science with Internet Economics.
The MSc Theoretical Computer Science aims to provide you with an in depth understanding of the area of Theoretical Computer Science. A particular focus of the programme is on Computational Game Theory, an area of on the intersection of computer science and economics which has seen a recent rapid growth and in which there is expected to be a significant skills shortage.
The programme also provides a solid foundation for you if you are aiming at a research degree in Theoretical Computer Science. It will provide a strong background and exposition to research topics in the area.
This programme is also available as Theoretical Computer Science with a Year in Industry MSc.
The programme is organised as two taught semesters followed by an individual project undertaken over the summer. During each semester MSc students study a number of modules adding up to 60 credits per semester (120 in total). This will be followed by a dissertation, also 60 credits, making an overall total of 180 credits.

Computer Science at the University of Liverpool has a history going back to the 1960s. As the subject grew in importance, the Department of Computer Science was established in 1983 to provide learning and research support in this new and exciting field that spans and interplays with more traditional subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Life Sciences and Engineering. After five decades, the Department is still rapidly growing and evolving and remains at the forefront of Computer Science globally. The Department was one of the first in the University to be involved in the establishment of Xian Jiaotong Liverpool University, and has forged a strong international partnership for teaching and research between the two institutes.
Access state of the art facilities
The department is based on the main University of Liverpool campus, close to the city centre, in the grade II listed Ashton and Holt building (see Campus Map). It offers a comfortable working environment with excellent research, study and computing facilities. It is placed directly opposite the Harold Cohen Library with its vast collection of textbooks and research literature. The Library also provides plenty of additional study places.
