I am currently studying the Financial Mathematics MSc.
Why did you choose postgraduate study at the University of Liverpool?
During my bachelor’s degree, I found a strong interest in the financial application of maths and I was looking for a postgraduate programme to pursue further studies in this area and one that gave me the raw materials to take up a career in the financial world. I spent a month in Liverpool last year in order to improve my English and I fell in love with the city. I checked for the MSc programmes and the Financial Mathematics MSc met all my requirements. The high standards of teaching quality and employability ranks were also key factors in making my decision.
What’s the best thing about studying in your department?
The best thing about studying in my department is the friendly and supportive environment. All the teachers are helpful, and make you feel comfortable to ask any question. There are always a lot of different activities and conferences going on, which I find extremely stimulating because you can find yourself interested in something you haven't heard before and discover new links between something you have already studied and something completely estranged.
How do the facilities in the University help you with your studies?
The University offers a lot of facilities that makes student life easier. You can find everything you need around the campus. I was astonished to discover how efficient and quick every service is. In particular, I found the Sydney Jones library extremely remarkable, not only because you can find a productive environment adaptable to every request, but also because it becomes a meeting point for all the students, providing the perfect place to balance your duties with your social life.
What kind of support do you get from tutors?
Tutors are extremely professional and supportive, being there to clarify every doubt you might have, not only regarding the subject of the course but also concerning your career and future prospects. They are always available and flexible in order to respond to your needs in the best way they can.
What do you enjoy most about the whole experience?
The whole experience has been amazing, and it has helped me grow professionally and personally. The thing I enjoyed most is the fact that I was able to meet a lot of people from different cultures and backgrounds coming from every part of the world. This is something that strongly enriched me, and I am grateful for all the amazing people that I can actually call my friends.
How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?
My postgraduate study will help my career prospects both because of the knowledge I gained and the positive consequences of this experience it has had on me. I found myself in a totally new context and improved my skills. During the year, I have had the possibility to take part in many different events organised by my department.
What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study?
Choosing an undergraduate or postgraduate study is one of the hardest and most important decision you will ever make, because it will strongly affect your whole life. Think carefully about what your interests are and if you really feel motivated to go along this path, as you need to invest a lot of time and energy. This is a great opportunity for your education and personal development.
