Big Data and High Performance Computing MSc

Why did you choose postgraduate study at the University of Liverpool?

I wanted to originally do a PhD within the realm of analysing large amounts of data using machine learning techniques. My undergraduate lecturer at the time suggested this master’s as an ideal stepping stone to give me a strong foundation of knowledge. I then looked at what it entailed, I was impressed with all the modules and was eager to study all the topics.

What’s the best thing about studying in your department?

It’s hard to pinpoint the best thing in the Department as there are many! There’s the friendly staff who are always willing to help, access to Hartree High Performance Computers, weekly extracurricular seminars by (visiting) lecturers to explain interesting research and it is also ranked top in the UK for 4* and 3* research in the REF rankings. There are many brilliant qualities.

How do the facilities in the University help you with your studies?

There are loads of facilities for everyone, for example, the two 24 hour libraries (with the best twitter account in the world: @LivUniLibrary), and at peak times they open up additional spaces across the University to ensure there’s space for everyone to study. The careers service is incredibly useful for providing help with applications, CVs and finding potential jobs or what to do in life in general. There is also the Liverpool Guild of Students, our huge Student Union with plenty of bar and activity space for winding down and socialising.

What kind of support do you get from lecturers?

Lecturers are constantly there for both academic and personal help. As long as you are putting effort in they are happy to help and answer any questions.

What do you enjoy most about the whole experience?

It may be cheesy to say but the atmosphere in Liverpool in general. There’s always something going on such as citywide festivals or live music on in pubs every night of the week. Plus, the fact it’s cheap with lots of independent shops and restaurants is also a bonus… Oh and I’m getting a fantastic education whilst enjoying myself here.

How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?

Definitely, as this is an opportunity for me to invest into a subject that I’m passionate about and get a large return which will hopefully enable me to go into research and obtain a PhD.

What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study?

If you find a subject you love and you are interested in the majority of the modules, take the leap and do it! It provides so many opportunities.
