Why did you choose a master’s at the University of Liverpool?

I’ve lived in the Liverpool area most of my life and it’s always been one of my favourite cities. With a vibrant culture and a world renowned University known for its first class research, making the University of Liverpool my first choice was an easy decision as the place to study for my master’s degree.

What’s the best thing about studying in your department?

Everyone in the department has been so welcoming and this has enabled me to settle in much faster than I expected. I have really enjoyed my time studying here, with an excellent course that is both challenging and intellectually stimulating, I am able to choose from a wide range of modules to tailor my degree to the parts of chemistry most relevant to my areas of interest. Additionally, careers events and talks by leading researchers in their field are regularly arranged to complement my studies and broaden my chemical knowledge.

How do the facilities in the University help you with your studies?

The laboratory facilities within the Chemistry Department are outstanding. As a result, I have been able to have a much more hands on experience than that during my undergraduate degree at another university. Furthermore, I have the excellent opportunity of working in the new and impressive Materials Innovation Factory during my research project over the summer, which hosts a remarkable array of laboratory facilities in a real life industrial environment.

What kind of support do you get from tutors?

Support has always been available from the moment I started the course. An MSc mentor is assigned to the students on the programme and they have been incredibly helpful throughout my studies. Furthermore, student course representatives are assigned at the beginning of the academic year and attend regular Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) meetings to ensure any issues that may arise are brought to the Department’s attention.

How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?

To obtain a master’s degree in chemistry enhances my career prospects greatly. I know now when it comes to job applications I have a qualification from an excellent Chemistry Department that is highly regarded by employers worldwide.

What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study?

Postgraduate study is a great way for students to stand out from the crowd when it comes to job applications. I was unsure whether to continue with education following undergraduate study but it has definitely been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I have really enjoyed my year in Liverpool. I have loved studying within such amazing city, being able to meet students from around the world and studying such an engaging course.
