Petroleum Reservoir Geoscience MSc

Why did you choose master’s study at the University of Liverpool?

Nowadays, oil companies are demanding and the sector has become very competitive so choosing the right university and master’s programme was crucial. When I was searching for Petroleum Geoscience programmes I wanted a university that offered high-quality education with lecturers with a good expertise in the oil industry, excellent facilities and with research related to my field. The University of Liverpool had all those characteristics and the module content and aims of the master’s looked very attractive and convenient for the type of knowledge and challenges I was looking for.

What’s the best thing about studying in your department?

The best thing is the industry-standard software available like Petrel, and the research facilities with cutting edge technology such as the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Both resources give you the opportunity to get an idea of how it would be to work in companies and develop skills in the area and these programmes are not easily found in all universities. Also, the staff are well-known researchers in their fields and make the fulfilling multidisciplinary learning.

How do the facilities in the University help you with your studies?

The library has been the most helpful facility so far. The fact that it is open 24 hours is great! Also, the vast literature available (books and online resources) and study rooms have been important tools to complete assignments or to revise during assessment periods. The laboratories have also been a great support to do practical work and to efficiently undertake research for my dissertation by providing all the equipment I need, as well as technical support. I should also say that the computer access with your personalised ID is a great help as you can practically have your files available in any computer within the buildings.

What kind of support do you get from tutors?

The programme is very challenging and the support and advice from my lecturers has been essential. They always share their experience and give clear explanations to any questions I have regarding the lectures, assignments or exams. Their advice on time management has also been very helpful, especially when it comes to organise my activities to meet tight deadlines.

What do you enjoy most about the whole experience?

I would say everything! I have really enjoyed university events and lectures, but perhaps having the opportunity of meeting new people from different countries and backgrounds and learn from them has been one of the things I enjoy the most. Also, Liverpool is a great city to live in. It has all  been a life-changing experience.

How do you believe undertaking a master’s will help your career prospects?

I’ve always seen myself either working for a big oil company or continuing with a PhD and do research related to the petroleum sector. The best part of being undertaking postgraduate study, especially this programme, is that it is helping me to develop the skills, expertise and critical thinking needed for any career path I choose to follow.

What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study?

Undertaking a master’s requires the very best of you in every task and this helps you to improve every day.  I’d advise them not to miss this opportunity, especially if you want to become even more competitive in your field and enhance your future career.
