To provide a focus for students' knowledge of recent methodological and theoretical developments in their chosen field and facilitate their acquisition of relevant subject knowledge;

To provide a framework within which to design a feasible research project;

To arrive in a position to begin a piece of independent study, with confidence, within appropriate scholarly conventions.

Aims

To provide a thorough understanding of a range of research methods;

To enable students to understand and critique the methodological approaches used within the interdisciplinary environment of Irish Studies;

To enable students to identify the most appropriate methods for any given research topic.

Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Upon completion of the module students will have begun the process of developing their dissertation research topic.

(LO2) Students will be able to work independently and understand the advantages and limitations of various researchmethods, understand the ethical implications of their proposed research topic, identify the most appropriate research methods and sources for their intended dissertation topic, present their ideas in an academic environment in front of their peers and will have prepared a research proposal which will enable them to plan their research effectively.
